Too little time?

Is 24 hours enough for you? How are you spending your 24 hours in a day? In the recent months I found myself got interested on stuffs from different fields such as computer science, programming, investing, numerology and building side projects. I want to learn all of them but too much work, too little time. I spend most of my time struggling whether to focus on one area at a time or doing all of them simultaneously. I am still undecided what is the best approach but for now, I am going to break things down into two parts - career growth and personal growth and work on both of them simultaneously. So below is me breaking down my day into hours slot to do some analysis on how much time I actually have to start learning things that I am interested in.
Here’s a simple break down of how I am spending my time right now on weekday and weekend.
Weekday:
- 9am-10am (Breakfast + catching up what’s happening on twitter)
- 10am-6pm (work + lunch break)
- 6pm-7pm (exercise)
- 7pm-9pm (dinner + rest)
- 9pm-12.30am (surfing the internet)
- 12.30am-9am (sleep)
Weekend:
- 9am-11am (Breakfast + catching up what’s happening on twitter)
- 11am-1pm (surfing the internet without purpose)
- 1pm-2pm (lunch)
- 2pm-6pm (again, chilling, watching youtubes)
- 6pm-7pm (exercise)
- 7pm-9pm (dinner + chill)
- 9pm-12.30am (again youtubes and doing nothing)
- 12.30am-9am (sleep)
Damn, I am ashame of myself looking at how I am spending my time right now. Clearly, it isn’t that I have
too little time, it is just that I am wasting most of them. This quote fits perfectly here to keep myself
reminded that Time is gold
Time is free, but it’s priceless. You can’t own it, but you can use it. You can’t keep it, but you can spend it. Once you’ve lost it you can never get it back.

I definitely have to do something to manage my time better. I am not a fan of planning my day into hours slot because I find it difficult to stick with. I was recently introduced to YNAB on budgeting my money, so I want to try something similar but for time budgeting. Looking at my day breakdown above, I am spending 5.5 hours and 11 hours doing non productive work on a weekday and weekend respectively. Let’s look at all these hours in a weekly basis:
(5.5 * 5 days) + (11 * 2 days) = 49.5 hours
Let’s say I want to spend 1.5 hours a day chilling, relaxing and watching youtubes.
(49.5 - (1.5 hours * 7 days)) = 39 hours.
It is so much easier now for me to budget my time, I am going to spend 25 hours and 14 hours working on career growth related and personal growth related learning respectively.
That’s it for today. Hopefully I will spend my time more wisely now. I am actually tempted to build a time budgeting app. Follow me if you are interested on product like this.
